Hello

Hope everyone's feeling ok and having a nice day!

Since February this year I've been having physiotherapy once a week as I can't use and straighten/bend my left knee/leg very well (that's the area that's most affected with RA), it doesn't seem to be doing very well, one week it's going really well then the next week I'm having a flare up then back to square one! My physiotherapist referred me to hydrotherapy, thinking this would work better for me, my rheumatologist then pushed it further as the waiting list was very long!! It's been playing on my mind for a while, 'what will happen when I get there' 'who will I be doing it with' 'what about this and that and so on', but today I had a phonecall to say they have a space for me to start hydrotherapy! Now I'm scared and starting to worry, which then starts a flare up off!

What am I to expect at hydrotherapy and is there really anything to worry about?

Thank you for reading - I'm very nervous!!

Natalie 😄

I had hydro after a big back operation to loosen me up. I loved it lovely warm water and lovely people
advising me how to walk and bend.

Nothing to worry about it - like a warm bath

Definately do not be worried. I've had several stays in my rheumy hospital with bad flares and each time been in the hydrotherapy pool.
Its heavenly. We just did gentle exercises in a group to begin with and then were given individual exercise tasks according to our problems, but nothing too difficult.
There were one or two people who were afraid of the water and they were escorted in, taken to the side and given all the support they needed. Folk who are unable to walk down the slope into the pool were taken in in a water wheelchair. Its so deliciously warm and relaxing and frees up the joints. As Dorothy says you will probably be a bit stiff afterwards but its worth it. I also attended as an out patient and had the same excellent treatment.
Enjoy Zena x

I've had lots of hydrotherapy in the past
It's always been benefitial

The last few times I was anxious because I can't dress myself but I let them know that and they agreed to help me. They were wonderfully kind.

The core stability exercises in the pool helped me no end.

You will be exhausted afterwards.

But it's worth it!

Hi Natalie

Really pleased all went well at the hydro - I went as well today !

I think it is easy to overdo it in the water so take it very slowly at first, hopefully you have a physio there to give you good advice about the type of exercises you need to do. I have been going once a week for about four months now and know it really helps with aches and pains I have in my shoulders and arms.

Hope all continues to go well for you ThumpUp

Hi Natalie - I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the hydro, but it sounds as if you overdid it a little for the first session, and that would explain the pains next day. Persevere and I'm sure it'll get easier as your muscles get stronger again. You're young and have been through a huge lot with RA plus 2 babies, and your body will take time to rebuild itself, so keep faith.

I used to go to an aquafit class at the local leisure centre (haven't been for a while cos I've been lazy!) but I was amazed at how much I could do in the water that I couldn't do on land (like run and jump), and I really worked muscles that never normally got used, so they did ache a bit next day. But I felt much better overall and I really should restart it because it was good fun!!

Hope you enjoy the next hydro sessions - Sylvia xx

glad you had a good time, the stiffness will ease up you just need to know how far you can go,the physio should be able to help on that,i still go to aqua zumba bit more energy than normall aqua robics etc,i feel it helps but i do stop if i think the oh! oh! too far, good for you, dorothy.

BigGrin I used to go to aqua exercises in water to music.....haven't been since foot op, worried I haven't got good footing to climb in pool using steps or getting out!! Its not a walk in slope pool, and have no flexibility in sitting down to enter pool, only a over the top belly flop (wouldn't be good)!

Water zumba I've checked out is not local, which means a half an hour drive there, exercise and half an hour back. Steps in and out of pool.

Racking my brains on doing something (I love being in the pool)......I love bath spa (but is for a treat and pleasure, not exercise)!!!

jane, try enquiring at your nearest health club about your needs,i have a friend who has mobility issues and she joined our local warners,(after so many dissapointments at pools,) they put a ramp in for her at the pool and after she is in it gets taken away till she is ready to come out, also one of the gym instructors is always on hand while she is there,i did go 1 time with her and it was really good to see how she was taken care of,i know she tends to phone first and makes her swim on their quiet time but it works for her,i had a ball the day i went they waited on her/us the whole time but then she is a paying member, dorothy.

Smile LOL Hi Dorothy
Wow, that sounds lovely to be waited on!!

Yesterday I decided to reduce my leisure centre membership, saving pennies just to swimming.

I forgot to ask the leisure centre would they consider zumba in the water.

Its I am enjoying learning to adapt around ra and what I maybe not be able to do, rather than being negative and not trying!

My husband treated me to a bag of walnuts following the food doctor on Wednesday.......a little treat of a few!
